I have a dog. His name is Mocha. Mocha is 13 year-old Chow. I have had Mocha since he was 6 weeks old. Now, I know that perhaps I’m a bit prejudice, but let me tell you, no dogs gets more comments about his beauty and age than Mocha. We go around the block and several people a day say “Isn’t that a beautiful puppy!” or “How cute, how old is he, 2 or 3?” I proudly reply, “He’s 13,” and wait for them to gasp.
I know that genetics play a part and I know that Mocha really isn’t a “special” dog or my grandfather re-incarnated. Mocha looks good and acts like a youngster for one of the same reasons that any healthy person does: good nutrition and loving care.
I’m not a nazi about his diet - I don’t cook for him every day or spend most of my income buying fresh, raw meat for him. But, since I educated myself on nutrition (for humans and pets) I have been committed to giving him organic foods with a balance of meats, veggies and a few grains whenever possible. I notice a difference in him, and I believe he notices too.
Just like for people, I believe the diet of an animal can affect their mood, behavior, comfort and their beauty. I know, also, that there are new fads about what dogs should eat, how much dry vs. wet, raw and organic, home-cooked, even vegetarian. No matter what you choose to feed your pet, do it with care and concern and in this way, you can rest assured that you give your pet the same kind of loyalty that they show you.
